This paper investigates substrate preferences of the Greek Colobine Mesopithecus pentelicus WAGNER, from the Miocene of Pikermi, by examining selected functional features of the calcaneus that distinguish between arboreal and terrestrial Cercopithecidae. Mesopithecus possesses a relatively long proximal calcaneal region associated with a slightly low and wide surface for the insertion of m. triceps...
In this paper, the stratigraphy and depositional setting of Upper Jurassic basinal sediments at the eastern margin of the Tabas Block of east-central Iran are discussed with special emphasis on the rich ammonite fauna. The basinal sediments comprise the upper part of the Qal'eh Dokhtar Limestone Formation and a new, hitherto not recognized lithostratigraphic unit, the low-weathering Korond Formation,...
A recent publication in Geobios is the reason for contrasting two methods of correlation. It is concluded that the use of the ''Faunal Distance Index'' gave erroneous results in the examples studied, whereas the study of evolutionary lineages gave results that are more consistent with accepted correlations. It is stressed that care should be taken in citing authors or data in a correct way.
The Toarcian sediments exposed at Sainte-Verge (Deux-Sevres, France) are especially rich in echinoderm remains. The present paper describes and illustrates the ophiuroids. On the basis of lateral arm plates, 13 species are distinguished, including two new ones: Sinosura fasciata sp. nov. and Sinosura extensa sp. nov. Most of the recognized species have been recorded previously from the Late Toarcian...
A new genus and two new species, Salagouneura chimaira nov. gen. and nov. sp. and Phaneroneura minuta nov. sp., together with several other specimens of uncertain affinities, are herein assigned to the family Martynoviidae. This family was previously only known from the Lower Permian of Oklahoma and Kansas (USA). The new specimens have been discovered in the Salagou Formation (Permian; Herault, France)...
New rhinocerotid teeth from Laogou in Hezheng (Gansu, China) are described and identified as Hispanotherium matritense. Comparing the other Chinese Middle Miocene elasmotheres with material of H. matritense from Iberian localities and Laogou, we confirm the synonymy proposed previously for the species Hispanotherium lintungensis, Tesselodon fangxianensis, Caementodon tongxinensis and Huaqingtherium...
